Politics is full of one-time rivals who put political differences aside when it becomes politically advantageous to do so. And, once upon a time, Jindal and Vitter got off on a great foot. Before their falling out, Vitter used to offer up a sunny anecdote about his first time meeting Jindal in 1992. Vitter sat on the committee responsible for interviewing local students for Rhodes scholarships, and one of those students was Jindal. After Jindal's interview, as Vitter told it, "I came home and told my wife, 'I just met somebody today who makes me feel both stupid and old.'"

“LSU needs more support to be Louisiana’s true flagship university.
This state has more flagships than the Navy,” Bond said. “We need to figure out what we’re going to do and if we’re really going to make LSU a priority as our main university.

Early voting starts Today for Feb. 21 special elections

Weeklong early voting begins Saturday for the Feb. 21 special elections to fill vacant seats in the Louisiana House of Representatives.

East Baton Rouge, Iberia, Rapides and Vermilion parishes have elections to fill open legislative seats while Evangeline Parish is hosting a mayoral race in the Village of Turkey Creek.

Early voting continues through Saturday, Feb. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, excluding Sunday.

Those who want to vote early may do so in person at their parish Registrar of Voters Office or at other designated locations.

For a complete listing of early voting locations, visit the secretary of sate’s website geauxvote.com.

Voters also can use the secretary of state’s smartphone app, GeauxVote Mobile, to find out where to vote, what’s on their ballot and their voting districts.

Candidates for governor set to appear at annual meeting of the Louisiana School Boards Association

Second gubernatorial forum set for Feb. 24

The four announced candidates for governor are set to appear on a forum at the annual meeting of the Louisiana School Boards Association on Feb. 24, officials said Wednesday.

The gathering is taking place in Shreveport.

It would mark the second such appearance by the foursome, who took questions on state highway and bridge needs at a Baton Rouge hotel last month.

Those set to appear include U.S. Sen. David Vitter, of Metairie; Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, of Baton Rouge; Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle, of Breaux Bridge; and state Rep. John Bel Edwards, of Amite.

Vitter, Dardenne and Angelle are Republicans.

Edwards is a Democrat.

The meeting is set for from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Shreveport Convention Center

The candidates will be asked questions on kindergarten-through-12th-grade education, said Scott Richard, executive director of the LSBA.

Common Core, which represents new standards in reading, writing and math, is expected to be a key topic.

The forum takes place less than a month before about 300,000 public schools students are set to take Common Core tests for the first time.

Gov. Bobby Jindal cannot seek a third consecutive term.

WASHINGTON – The Republican Party has made Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, its featured member of the week.

The member spotlight can be viewed at GOP.gov. The distinction is another example of how the freshman congressman is already making waves in Washington. In just his first month on the job, Dr. Abraham has already:

Congress has gotten off to a fast start, and we plan to keep that momentum going,” Dr. Abraham said.
