Angelle: Local guy with a long-term vision

Angelle said he’s got the best job he ever wanted — husband to his wife, Dianne, and father to his five children, all of whom grew up in Breaux Bridge. Even when he served in Baton Rouge, he lived in his hometown.

But as governor, he said, he’s got goals he wants to promote — among them, to ensure workforce training is available that will help match up the state’s unemployed or underemployed with the influx of good jobs now available and unfilled in Louisiana. That, he said, is a passion because he’s seen the need not only in Breaux Bridge, but around the state.

He said wants the state to shore up its finances, to improve its roads, to be fair in taxation.

(Senator Fred) Mills said Angelle will deliver what he promises.

“People gravitate to a leader like that,” he said.

Taking a position at odds with the state party, the largest parish Republican organization on Tuesday will announce it is backing Buddy Caldwell’s re-election bid for state attorney general.

Jenkins pointed out that while still a Democrat, Caldwell filed a lawsuit in March 2010 to block the federal Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. Caldwell said at the time: “This is not a partisan issue. It’s about what is best for the state of Louisiana and its people. This act is an unprecedented intrusion on state sovereignty and individual freedom.”

Caldwell also joined Texas’ successful challenge to President Barack Obama’s executive order on amnesty for illegal immigrants and filed one of the few successful lawsuits arguing for the validity of the state constitutional bans on same-sex marriage.

“Marriage is between one man and one woman, period,” Caldwell answered on a questionnaire submitted to the parish party.

With 76,121 of the state’s 806,978 registered Republicans, East Baton Rouge Parish has the second-largest number of GOP voters — Jefferson Parish has 2,278 more registered Republicans, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

But in the last two statewide elections, more Baton Rouge Republicans turned out to vote than any other single parish in the state.

“I am humbled and delighted to receive the endorsement,” Caldwell said in a prepared statement. “I am very pleased to see that the Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish took into account experience and qualifications in making its endorsement for attorney general.”

In the race for governor, U.S. Sen. David Vitter will face questions and criticism about his prostitution scandal. Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and state Rep. John Bel Edwards promise as  much.

Just in time for the 10th anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Louisiana governor's race looks to be a perfect storm that strikes in late August and all of September. The outer bands are already upon us.

Early frontrunner U.S. Sen. David Vitter is running true to form — attacking straw-man opponents. When a statewide poll by Verne Kennedy showed the senator slipping among his core constituencies (evangelicals, Republicans and seniors), Vitter's campaign staff broadsided the pollster.

Kennedy says he told Ruckert that Vitter should consider not even running for governor if the senator’s numbers keep slipping among his core constituencies — Republicans, Evangelicals and seniors.

Perhaps that’s what caused such a caustic response from Team Vitter.

“The difficulty for Vitter is those are his core groups,” Kennedy said. “They are producing most of his support. So if he’s falling there, it’s not good for him. In meeting with his staff and going over it, I did raise one question that got them very tense. Basically, looking through the crosstabs and the numbers, I said my advice is free, but I would recommend that Vitter do a survey about a week before qualifying to see where he is. Because if the trend continues — and I’m not saying it will — but if it continues he could catch himself in a situation where he can’t make the runoff. If that happens, his political career is over. That made them very uneasy, but I was just trying to give them good political advice.” 

Kennedy said a significant number of Vitter’s “soft” supporters among Republicans, Evangelicals and seniors have come to view Angelle as a viable alternative.

“Vitter’s soft support is falling back. One of the telling things in my crosstabs involves a Vitter-Edwards runoff question. Among white voters, if you look at how individuals voted in the primary ballot question, when you ask those who voted for Angelle how they’ll vote in the runoff [between Vitter and Edwards], only 51% say ‘Vitter.’ Among Dardenne supporters, only 34% said they would vote for Vitter. … That tells me a lot — that he can’t get the votes [he needs] from his fellow Republicans.

The governor’s race is tightening and could soon change dramatically. Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter, the clear early frontrunner, has fallen to second place in one independent poll, behind Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle. At the same time, two prominent Democrats have emerged as potential candidates who could really shake things up for Vitter and Democrat state Rep. John Bel Edwards.

Qualifying for the Oct. 24 primary is Sept. 8-10, which leaves little time for late entries. Still, the talk of political circles last week was word that local businessman John Georges and New Orleans City Councilman Jason Williams are considering the race. 

Meanwhile, Vitter may have bigger problems than the possibility of facing Angelle or Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, both Republicans, in the runoff. According to Kennedy’s latest survey, which was taken in late July, Vitter’s statewide support has declined significantly in recent months.

Kennedy’s surveys in May, June and July show Vitter falling from 28 to 21 percent — and that's without any sustained attacks against him. Meanwhile, Angelle has risen from the teens to 24 percent. 

Most important, Angelle leads Vitter for the first time in an independent poll. Edwards runs a close third with 20 percent; Dardenne trails at 13 percent; “undecideds” are at 21 percent. The margin of error is plus or minus four percent. The numbers cited above include respondents who are committed to, and those who are “leaning” toward, a candidate.

The order of finish is the same without the leaners: Angelle, 16; Vitter, 15; Edwards, 14; Dardenne, 8; leaners and undecided, 47.


Kennedy attributes Vitter’s drop to a decline in support among several key constituencies — including Republicans. Since June, Vitter has fallen 5 to 11 percentage points among whites, Republicans, Evangelicals, women, and seniors.

Today, Scott Angelle released the following statement on Planned Parenthood following the release of a fifth video by the Center for Medical Progress: 

"The latest video showing Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast employees discussing the harvesting and sale of unborn children’s body parts is egregious and despicable. This is the same Planned Parenthood affiliate building a new facility in New Orleans.

Today, I'm putting them on notice, when I'm elected governor, Planned Parenthood will receive no contracts from the state of Louisiana."

Scott Angelle comes to the rescue

While Friday’s gubernatorial forum at the Cajundome was fairly exciting, for Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle, it paled in comparison to the ride home.

His opponents headed off to the campaign trail after the Louisiana Municipal Association forum. But, Angelle ended up jumping up on the running board of an out-of-control pickup, stopping it before the vehicle crashed, then accompanied the unconscious driver to the hospital.
